SUMMARY:

Healthy foods and diets should achieve not only human health but also the sustainability of food systems, ensuring sustainable consumption and production and the health and well-being of present and future generations. With the concern of the integration of healthiness and sustainability, the community has been focusing on strategies oriented towards the transformation of food systems and on interventions that seek healthier and more sustainable food practices. Specifically, beyond just understanding consumers, changing consumer behavior is central to promoting healthier and more sustainable consumption, bridging the gap between intentions and behavior observed in sustainability contexts. Despite this, there is still a lack of studies focused on understanding behavior to amplify the effects of interventions for healthier and more sustainable eating. Thus, we aim to identify the barriers and facilitators to healthier and more sustainable food practices based on capacities, opportunities, and motivations (COM-B). By adopting the behavior change wheel (BCW), this study makes it possible to identify the mechanisms necessary to facilitate change, enabling the identification of interventions consistent with the barriers to healthy and sustainable eating. Unlike other studies, the present one specifies indicators for healthy and sustainable food, making it possible to expand the mechanisms of change to specific products, such as organic, local, plant-based, and fair trade
