SUMMARY:

This research project focuses on feminicide in border regions and the existing public policies in these regions aimed at tackling this complex social problem. The general objective of the proposed research is to evaluate existing public policies. Feminicide is defined as the intentional killing of women because of their gender and represents a huge challenge for societies and governments around the world. Border regions are characterized by peculiar socio-political and cultural dynamics and therefore often face specific challenges in combating feminicide. To achieve the proposed objective, three independent but complementary studies will be carried out, one theoretical and two empirical. The theoretical study (already carried out and presented in this project) mapped and analyzed scientific production on feminicide in border regions. The aim of this first study was to understand how the phenomenon is being treated in the literature and based on this, to propose a research agenda. The review results show a lack of empirical studies and a concentration of theoretical studies on the Mexico-United States border. The review also showed the variables that have been pointed out in the literature as explanatory of feminicide, which served as a subsidy for the design of the empirical studies. The second study will aim to describe the incidence of feminicides in Brazilian border regions and test explanatory factors for this phenomenon. To this end, data will be collected and analyzed for the municipalities that form part of the Brazilian border. Based on the results of this study, a public policy evaluation model will be developed for use in the final study. The third study will aim to identify and evaluate existing public policies in border municipalities. It is hoped that the studies proposed in this project will broaden our understanding of the occurrence of feminicides on the Brazilian border and thus contribute to improving existing public policies and developing new ones to tackle this problem.
